Our story
Our story begins in a bar with two different versions, but we are going with the wife’s version—because the wife is always right.
It begins in April 2022. This was the first time our paths crossed, but we soon realised we had missed each other on a few occasions—such as high school for one, a Halloween dance at the same bar the previous year, and Corne working literally across the street from me.
At the end of the night, we only got to introductions because she didn’t want to give her number to me—but she said I never asked, which I highly doubt. She stalked me on Instagram and followed me, and that’s where the conversation actually started.
The original idea was that Corne asked to go out for coffee, but I’m a food lover, so I suggested we go out to dinner—which he happily agreed to. The restaurant I chose was John Dory’s.
I was nervous, so she did most of the talking, with me now and then asking something or commenting on what she said while sipping my brandy. When we looked at the time, the restaurant was about to close, so I suggested we go for a drive and talk some more.
Corne decided to stop at a park close to his house, and we continued our conversation while listening to music. It started to drizzle, and when it was close to two o’clock in the morning, we decided to call it a night. But as luck would have it, Corne had switched off the car while we were listening to music—so the battery was dead. The date ended with him teaching me how to jump-start a car, with him pushing it in the rain.
Fast forward to September 2022—I decided to make it official and asked Hanita out while playing a game of mini golf. We arrived early, so we decided to go for coffee. I was very nervous, but at least I won at mini golf—and I won at life, because I found the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
In 2024, we planned a vacation to Mauritius. It was my first time flying in an airplane, and Corne thought it was funny when the plane took off—it wasn’t like he said it would be! On the 14th of December, the second day of our trip, with a full moon in the night sky, we were taking photos. As I was looking at the ocean, I couldn’t hear him for a while, so I turned around—and there he was, down on one knee with a ring in his hand, asking the question I had been hinting at and waiting so long for.
And I said yes.
And that is our story.
